Slacker

Slacker.  That’s what Lesley Higgins aka @le_diable called me yesterday for running 13.5 miles (8:38 pace) instead of the 14 that I proclaimed on the way out the door via Twitter.  Doh.  I really have no defense: my watch either freaked out or I forgot to start it after I ran into a teammate on the Bridle Path in the midst of my mid-distance run.  The latter is more likely.  We ran together for probably about 1.5 when he trailed off as he was done w/ his 13.  I looked down at the watch and expected to see ~3.5 miles, instead I saw 1.7 and nothing moving.  Idiot.  I miscalculated the loops and ended up 800m short.  Gah!  I’m an idiot. 2 x 3 Makes the New Normal?

Kind of a long title, but I wanted to get a few thoughts across with it.  After a universally acknowledged BIG workout on Tuesday (universally acknowledged = poll of teammates) and uncertain what I had left, I wondered could I keep the back-to-back strong tempo sessions going.  The August weather front from Wednesday was pushed out by a series of thunderstorms that started as I was 1 mile into my warm up last night and heading to the CPTC meet up spot in CP.  When I heard the crack of thunder followed immediately by lightning I hesitated and thought of turning around, but I saw a teammate 30 meters ahead so I kept going.  Like idiots we all gathered under a tree.  Even after someone questioned our sanity, we didn’t budge until we started the workout.  35+ dummies.  Luckily the storm passed quickly and left us with moderate sprinkles and cooling breeze.  It was actually a money weather night for running. And the Winner Is?

… Me, But Fitter!  The auditors from PricewaterhouseCoopers have returned the envelope for the winner of one of the more coveted awards / opportunities on these Interwebs … Guest Blogger at A Marathoner!!!  Wooowhooo!!  Seriously, I’m flattered everyday anyone not in my family reads my musings, so the fact that I had multiple folks interested in blogging is shocking and heartfelt.  Thanks.  Ian – I’ll send you an email.  To the thousands (ok, less than thousands) who were not so “lucky”, I’ll do the Guest Blogger thing again soon. Race Report: BRAVO 5k

Unlike last week, I will not be ranting or whining about this race … got the hint that it was less than stellar, huh?  However, I’m not really emotional about it at all.  Really.  I got that out of my system in the race aftermath in an explicative-laced, email tirade to a teammate. :-) MP thank you! Shake It Up Some

I have not pub’d up this race like others, but tomorrow I am racing a low-key 5k in Brooklyn Sunday morning.  Why “low key”?  It’s a non-NYRR administered race which means it’s probably like 95% of weekend races found in communities all over the US.  In other words, it’s unlikely to feature 8,000 participants like last weekend’s Healthy Kidney 10k featuring at least 20 world-class elites.  Instead, there will probably be a few hundred weekend warriors looking to stay fit and check out, what I’m guessing, is a great view.  On the edge of Brooklyn, under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge with a full view of the Statute of Liberty, Staten Island and Manhattan.  I copped this pick from Google Images: Continue Reading

Over the Tempo Hump?

Maybe.  Maybe.  Just maybe I am getting over the CPTC Thursday night tempo hump.  Honestly, the real test won’t come until the next 2 x 4 mile session, but I’ve had back to back solid efforts now.  Clearly, a first for me.  I’m learning with this running business that everything builds and layers.  Coach planned for a hard interval session on Tuesday that was to serve as our primary workout of the week, but Mother Nature had a different agenda.  Therefore, the concern becomes how do competitive folks handle a workout on their own knowing that Thursday is coming.  As See Jess Run recently commented, structure in speedwork is a good thing.  Otherwise, you just go out and indiscriminately start hammering while trying to follow a fuzzy plan.  Prior to the start yesterday, Coach asked the 30+ who did the Tuesday workout on Wednesday.  Only one honest soul raised his hand.  I knew of at least 4 other folks who did it. ;-) Continue Reading

Fun with Fartleks

It’s been a couple of days since I last posted.  Nothing wrong.  Just tied up and the running schedule was interrupted.  A bit of catch up is in order: Continue Reading

Calling All Running Bloggers, Readers …

I’m sure at some point you all get bored with my rants … I know I do.  To remedy the situation, I want to invite folks to be guest bloggers on amarathoner.com.  Really, I’ve been considering it for some time.  I figured now is a good time to give it a shot.   Only a couple rules: Continue Reading

Let the Suffering Begin …

First, thank you for all of the kind sentiments regarding yesterday’s 10k.  You guys are knowledgeable and so very kind.  Based on your thoughtful comments and the passage of time, I have a better grip on my emotions and can pinpoint the cause of the disappointment I feel.  Here goes: Continue Reading
