On the Right Track

After a weekend of longish miles, I was happy to be back indoors on the track. Although, based on how I was feeling most of Tuesday, I wasn’t certain of the result at The Armory. Call it the 12-hour funk, but something washed over me at work and even on the subway ride uptown to the track. I wouldn’t call it lethargy, but I felt kind of bleh. I thought about it most of the day and the best I could come up with is that I might be in the beginning stages of catching the latest illness floating around my household. We’ll see if I am right later in the week.

My little day-funk dissipated once I walked into the building. I really like The Armory. I always feel refreshed when I enter. Last night would be no different. On tap:

– 5x800m at 5k pace w/ 200m recovery

– 3x300m at 3k pace w/ 100m recovery

We have been building for the last 3-4 weeks with the goal to get after it during this session (as well as Thursday’s upcoming tempo run). I expected an aggressive pace off the jump and the crew did not disappoint. The results:

Distance Time Pace
Warm up 1.5 Mi 13:00 8:40
1st 800 m 3:21 6:42
2nd 800 m 3:13 6:26
3rd 800 m 3:07 6:14
4th 800 m 3:06 6:12
5th 800 m 3:08 6:16
6th 300 m 1:02 5:33
7th 300 m 0:59 5:17
8th 300 m 0:58 5:12
Cool Down 1.5 Mi 13:00 8:40

But for another blow up with the last 800m interval, I am pretty happy with these nummies. I am pleased I held the pace (really we, since we run in single file and it’s follow the leader) and progressively got quicker with nearly each interval. Once I saw that I was reasonably close to a sub 1:00 300m, I really wanted it on the last 2 and kept stride with one of the Assassins. Most importantly, I kept it at about 85% effort level. It was terribly crowded on the track (almost got run over by our B Group) last night so to safely get out with a decent performance was the winning move.

In all, it was nice night cap. I can feel myself getting stronger week to week on the track. Now if I can just solve the tempos I might be getting somewhere!
