Recovery Shuffle

Good news. Bad news.

The good news is that I am not nearly as sore today as I was the day after my debute HM. The bad news is that I am still pretty sore. As I was munching on the bagel on my post-race walk home yesterday, I could already feel achyness in my quads. I stretched for a bit, and even tried a light jog to just get home faster. Nope. Calves started cramping immediately. Therefore, I slowly walked a couple miles home. No biggie.

I did stretch more, but still popped a couple Advil to lessen the inflamation as well as drink a lot of water. Those remedies seemed to help as I was moving around the apartment like normal. Unlike my debut HM, I was determined to get out the next day to shake out the lactic acid, etc. Not sure if that is a myth, but I can’t deal with not running for 2-3 days after a race. It’s only 13.1 miles.

Therefore, I set the alarm for a pre-dawn recovery “run”. Surprisingly, I woke up ahead of the alarm (good when that happens) and started to get dressed. Nothing major in terms of additional overnight stiffness. I did some extra stretching and hit the streets. The weather was more menacing than actually bothersome. The winds returned with light drizzle (50*), but violent thunderstorms were expected. Didn’t matter. Had to get it in.

How did it go? My first 20 steps were like 80lbs weights attached to my feet. A heavy leg + sore quad hot mix. I’m not sure I ever loosened up during the 6.5 miles. I wasn’t trying, but couldn’t even break 10:00 per mile. I didn’t care. During the last mile there is a decline from the park to 5th Ave. My quads screamed as I gingerly heal-toed it.

Hopefully, my plan worked that I got some of the gunk out. I wanted to run with the club tomorrow night indoors. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.
