Monthly Running Stats – November 2009

November October % Change vs. Prior Month
Days Run: 22 23 -4.35%
Total Miles: 176.4 200.1 -11.84%
Miles per days run: 8.02 8.70 -7.84%
Total Running Time: 25:26:04 30:32:20 -16.71%
Avg. Pace per Mile: 0:08:39 0:09:09 -5.52%

Observations: Normally, if I see that many negative percentage changes associated with my running I would be disappointed (at least w/ respect to the first 4 categories).  However, I’m feeling pretty good about November as (1) October was an off the charts month in terms of  mileage and (2) October is not sustainable on a month-to-month basis.  After suffering burnout for the first week of November, I decided that the maximum mileage for November would be (drumroll please) … 175 miles.  I was also committed to reducing pace.  I am very pleased on both fronts.  175 miles per month puts me on track for an annual total of 2,100.  That base mileage supports my “3:30 or Death” fall 2010 marathon mission.  Also, incorporating intervals or hill repeats once a week seems to have helped from a speed standpoint. Showing Some Discipline

After yesterday’s rough outing, I woke up today in attack mode.  I won’t call yesterday’s 14 “junk” miles because for the first 10-11, it was a pretty solid run.  However, I walked home with a sour taste in my mouth.  I know.  Some days, it just doesn’t go your way. Continue Reading

The Winner by Technical Knockout – The Wind

I gave it a good hard fight on my long run today, but I was beaten by Mother (and probably Father) Nature.   Wind gusts of 25 mph whipped through most of NYC today, including my home away from home, Central Park.  Forgive me as I anticipate this being a brief post or a really good one … not sure which yet. No Ill Effects from Gluttony

Since I started running, I only over eat twice a year … Thanksgiving and Christmas.  When I say over eat, I generally mean have a meal at regularly scheduled time and then following that up with a 2nd meal within a few hours and then likely double down on dessert later.  Yesterday was no exception.  However, to combat the expected intake of grub I did run 9 miles before we sat down for dinner.  Precautionary measures!  I’d be interested in your perspective, but on the other 363 days a year, I am usually slightly hungry all the time.  Not ravenous, but closer to an empty stomach than full.  Last night, I went to bed not stuffed, but certainly filled with all the goodies my wife made for dinner and dessert.  I’m very thankful for her and the blessings our entire family has received. In Control

After such a stellar interval workout yesterday, I knew I had to guard against pushing it too hard for a scheduled easy day.  I’ve done it before.  Allowing the “go fast or go home” mentality throw me off for an entire week.  Not good. Continue Reading

The Need for Speed

This morning was a great workout.  Quite possibly, the best I have had in recent memory.  It marked the return of the 800s.  Whoo hoo!  After a rest day yesterday, I was ready to go this morning … ready to test my fitness. Continue Reading

All Systems Go!

Not sure why, but I can never get out of bed on the weekends.  I woke up groggy today.  That and knowing I couldn’t run until early afternoon contributed to a morning of laziness.  The late start (1:30pm) is probably for the best as I finished yesterday’s LR at 2pm and it’s wise to recover for at least 24 hours before attempting a recovery run.
