It was PERFECT running weather this morning … 43*, 2 mph wind and sunny. It was chilly enough that I grabbed the gloves AND the fleece running cap, but kept it real with running shorts. At some point I need to get tights, but that will wait until I decide on new kicks … Brooks Launch are looking pretty, pretty, pretty good right now (Larry David reference)
Marathon Maiden said it best, “fast running begets fast running.” I understand the need for LSD (long slow distance) to build a base and endurance, but without pushing the pace how will you ever get faster? Therefore, I have added a dash of speed to the weekly workout. Yes … Yassos are back!
My warm up loop was probably too quick (8:40 pace) and a holdover from yesterday’s run, but I felt good so I went for it. I still have work to do in terms of regulating speed at the appropriate time … to wit, the 1st 800 was at 3:15. Wayyyyy too fast. However, it must have been the cool weather because the others were at 3:19, 3:20, 3:19. I only managed 4 Yasso’s this morning … as I think yesterday’s hill repeats + distance caught up with me. I remember thinking at about the 400m mark of each Yasso, “What am I doing??? This is nuts!” It will take me a couple more weeks to get the pacing right. Also, I need to move the Yasso’s to a flatter surface. The Bridle Path is very wide and roomy, but has too many rocks and hills to do hard repeats … I’ve never been accused of being graceful and can easily see a slip in fall at that pace on that surface. I’m running with scissors right now.
Rather than add the 5th Yasso, I did another loop to finish up at 5.3 miles. In all, two good hard runs back to back. I’m definitely ready for easier longer runs for the next couple days.
